Role & Mission

The Department is responsible for providing a system of recreational facilities and programs to benefit the residents of and visitors to Los Angeles County. The Department also seeks to develop broad-based knowledge and support for parks and recreation by creating community with its 88 cities, numerous conservancies and non-profit organizations. The expectations of the Department include: partnering in the efforts to reduce juvenile crime, improving school readiness among children, developing accessible parks and activities, protecting natural resources, open space and trails, establishing healthy parks, influencing the economic well-being and enhancing the social and emotional well-being of children and their families.

The Parks and Recreation Department provides the leadership for healthier communities, environmental stewardship, community connections and partnerships, professionalism, and integrity in its abilities to promote social, recreational, and cultural opportunities stimulating Los Angeles County’s residents and visitors through quality programming, services, and satisfaction.
