Department Role
Public Works is divided into 21 divisions and has over 3,800 employees. The Department is responsible for the design, construction, operation, maintenance, and repair of roads, bridges, airports, sewers, water supply, flood control and water conservation facilities; and for the design and construction of capital projects. Additional responsibilities include regulatory and ministerial programs for the County of Los Angeles, Los Angeles County Flood Control District, other special districts, and contract cities that request services. A 24-hour Emergency Operations Center is maintained to respond to problems reported by the public and other agencies as well as major emergencies, such as floods, windstorms, snowstorms, earthquakes, etc., and to monitor various Department facilities.

Transportation/Public Transit

Dial-a-Ride
The East Los Angeles Dial-A-Ride is a free, shared ride, curb-to-curb transportation service for qualified residents of the unincorporated County area of East Los Angeles. A qualified resident may travel up to (3) three miles outside the unincorporated County area.

Service is for residents sixty (60) years and over, or anyone with a physical, or mental disability that prevents the use of conventional public transportation. If you are under sixty (60) and disabled, a physician certification and/or a “disabled” ID card may be required as proof.Hours of service:

Monday-Friday 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
Saturday 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
Sunday 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

Service is not provided on the following Holidays:
New Year’s Day Labor Day
Memorial Day Thanksgiving Day
Independence Day Christmas Day

Bus Stop Amenities

Public Works provides advertising bus stop shelters in the unincorporated area of East Los Angeles. Our vendor, Clear Channel Outdoor installed these bus shelters. Clear Channel Outdoor is responsible for keeping the shelters clean and safe including collecting the trash at the bus stop shelters. If you want to report a dirty shelter or excess trash at a bus stop shelter, please contact Clear Channel Outdoor at (323) 730-4225.

Public Works has installed trash receptacles at some of the bus stops in the unincorporated East Los Angeles area. The maintenance contractor, ShelterClean Inc., is currently maintaining these trash receptacles five-times-a-week. If you want to report excess trash at any of these receptacles, please contact ShelterClean Inc. at (818) 846-1300.

If our maintenance contractors are non-responsive, if you want to report a dirty shelter or excess trash directly to us, or if you have any questions regarding our Bus Stop Amenities program, please contact Public Works at (626) 458-3961.

East Los Angeles Shuttle – El Sol
The East Los Angeles Shuttle, also known as El Sol, routes reach into various types of neighborhoods within East Los Angeles, including residential, commercial, and small industrial areas. There are three separate routes. Each route has two shuttles operating in opposite directions. Each route forms a loop, meeting at the East Los Angeles Civic Center where patrons can transfer among the three shuttle routes. Patrons can board and disembark at all elementary and middle schools in the East Los Angeles area, parks, libraries, social service agencies, East Los Angeles Community College, and the Commerce Shopping Center.

The shuttle costs $0.25 and provides one free transfer for use on a different shuttle route. The shuttle also accepts MTA passes and transfers. The fare is free for persons sixty (60) years old and over, for disabled patrons, and for children five (5) years old and under.

Our hours of operation are:

Monday through Friday, from 6:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.

Saturday, from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Sunday, No Service

Service is not provided on the following Holidays:
